-
- System requirements
- -------------------
- Spell Checker for Edit Boxes requires Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher. Within
- Windows 95 and Windows NT it works with 16-bit applications and with some, but
- not all, 32-bit ones. A 32 bit version should be available soon.
-
-
- Changes Since Version 2.4
- -------------------------
- 1> Custom dictionaries can be language specific.
- 2> Improved support for foreign language character sets
- 3> Will now check just about anything! Including such programs as Word for
- Windows Free Agent, the Win95 editor, Windows Write, and many others.
- Will check text in rich text format without losing formatting.
- 4> Allows the hotkey to be ignored in specific programs if it is causing
- problems.
- 5> Optional sample text displayed when a word is not found.
- 6> More controls now correctly highlight the word being checked when it is
- not found (but still not all of them, in some it is impossible).
- 7> No longer has any problems with Novell or certain mail packages.
- 8> Detects repeated words.
-
-
- Upgrading
- ---------
- If you are upgrading from a previous version you should overwrite the existing
- files with the new versions supplied. If possible this should be performed
- outside windows, otherwise unistall the existing version of spell before
- attempting to replace the files.
-
- NOTE: The new install/setup/options program is called spell.exe, replacing the
- previous setup.exe which some found confusing.
-
-
- Program elements
- ----------------
- This program consists of two elements:
-
- 1) The program files (which includes this readme file).
-
- 2) Dictionary files (.SCD) which provide the words for a particular
- language. You must install at least one dictionary file for the program
- to work.
-
- There are .SCD files available at the moment for: English (UK), English
- (US), German and French.
-
- You may have received a .SCD with the main program; if not contact your
- supplier, or if you have internet access you can ftp them from:
-
- ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/ibmpc/windows/spell
- ftp.clever.net/pub/quinion/
-
- or see:
-
- http://metro.turnpike.net/B/BriQui/where.html
- http://quinion.clever.net/quinion/spell/where.html
-
-
- Installation
- ------------
- The program and dictionary files need to be copied to a sub-directory on your
- hard drive. When you have copied the files you will need to create an icon
- for the spell.exe program in Program Manager (consult your Windows manual if
- you are unsure how).
-
- Run Spell and read any instructions which appear. For details of the options
- available from the options box press 'Help'. The defaults will work quite
- happily.
-
- I suggest at this point you stop off and read the help file for information
- on each of the available options, and you may also wish to create a user
- dictionary.
-
-
- Usage
- -----
- From within any edit box press the shortcut key that you have set up. The
- checker will start or display the Add Type box (please see the help file for
- an explanation). See the help file for details on using the check dialog box.
-
- The options box can be reached either from the main spelling checker box
- (type in a deliberately incorrect spelling and check it to make the box
- display), or by running Spell.exe
-
- If you are having problems, try doing a check from notepad which should always
- work. See the problems FAQ in the help file for more help.
-
-
- Uninstalling
- ------------
- Select 'Remove' from the Options box. You will be asked to reboot windows.
-
- Once windows has been rebooted the files can be safely deleted from your
- hard drive.
